Are continuous software updates always necessary?
The software updates of the devices we use in our daily lives are generally useful as they increase compatibility, security, and performance. For example Antivirus Software can have daily updates (due to speed of making and spreading of new informatic viruses), so it's a good habit perform those frequently and leave the "Auto-Update" feature set to "On". Updates are also useful for fixing programming errors (the so called "bugs") or issues that could cause malfunctioning or privacy breaches.
On the other hand, we should not overlook the "dark" side of the matter, namely that many times updates are a marketing tactic that companies use to increase sales and keep consumers loyal to their products. Many times these "updates" affect our daily lives, from performing a common banking operation to sending a document, or they even expand into our bureaucracy, upsetting procedures for managing documents such as ID cards, passports, licenses, and so on.
Although humans are adaptable and have developed a growth and learning-based mentality, from this point of view, updates become a natural part of our environment, and we can include them in our lives. However, some wonder why, if our "modus vivendi" has worked well for all this time, it must be updated and overturned continuously, almost paroxysmally.
This is because some people may show resistance to change, especially in cases where the changes are very rapid or not justified by a real need, perhaps updates only aimed at increasing the maintenance expenses of a product for a company that has won a contract in the management of any competence, in order to have a more economic rather than practical purposes goal.
Institutions should, therefore, consider bureaucratic changes, updates, and revisions in their entirety: on the one hand, they can be useful and improve the conditions of our lives, but on the other hand, they can become very annoying when changes are not necessary, and the citizen does not have the opportunity to choose whether to accept them or not. In any case, it is important to communicate the reasons for such changes in a transparent manner, just as electronics and computer manufacturers should do with their clients, promoting updates that ensure the actual security and stability of their products and not for mere marketing purposes.
